<text>To our many supporters who havecontacted us about the commentary("Thanks and Regret") in the lastnewsletter, we thank you. As manyare already aware, we have learnedthat the author of the commentary infact did not personally attend the PSAcultural show.Indeed, the author's depiction of ourevent is quite puzzling to those whoactually did attend. The commentarybemoaned an utter lack of Persianlanguage or culture in our program. However, as advertised (CelebratingPersian-American Culture), we offereda vibrant show, with traditional andcontemporary dances, singingperformances in Persian, comicalskits, a touch of poetry, a bit of history, and even some insightful lessons onNoruz traditions. We announced inPersian at the beginning of the eventthat we would conduct the majority ofthe show in English out of respect forour many non-Iranian friends in theaudience. Our guests includedprofessors, deans, and students of theUniversity of Michigan, as well asState Representative Marc Shulman, for whom we presented a special giftof appreciation for his tremendoussupport of our entire community. Weare proud to have created a venuewhere non-Iranians could come andlearn about our culture and feelwarmed, welcomed, and respected. This is a feature that is rare amongmost cultural organizations and isneeded at a time when our homelandis so gravely misunderstood.Perhaps the most entertaining featureof the commentary was the poeticlament of our alleged failure to singthe Soroode Ey Iran. In fact, ourshow opened with the Sorood amidstbreathtaking images of the TakhteJamshid and other historical sites ofIran. Several people have emailedspecifically to thank us for the singingof the Sorood. We do wish that theauthor would have shared in ourmelodies. Indeed, his own words echohis absence more loudly than wecould. Over 800 people joined ouraudience that memorable evening andenthusiastically applauded our efforts. We strive to continually improve our show, & welcome any feedback to(persians.board@umich.edu) fromthose who attended. With sincerethanks to the Persia House ofMichigan and all our communitymembers for their support over theyears, we look forward to sharingmore great memories at future culturalshows and events.Respectfully yours,The Persian Students AssociationUniversity of Michigan</text>

<text>Dear Khaneh Iran; Thanks for your efforts and services to our Iranian community or as you have started to call it our Iranian-American community! This sudden change of status is what I have some issue with and would like to present a simple common sense argument before our status is entirely and completely changed by such an honor. My argument is rather simple-minded but has a connection to what we often refer to as heritage and it goes like this. If I am an Iranian, generally meaning I was born in Iran and now happens to live in US then I cannot really be an Iranian-American unless generally speaking I was born in two places at the same time. Then who am I? I am simply an Iranian who resides in US and is part of a minority ethnic group in this country. For many like me to be categorized under an Iranian-American flagship makes little or no sense. Now if I were an American, born in America, and had Iranian parents then the same argument would have hold. In such case I basically would have been an American with Iranian roots and not an Iranian-American unless once again I was born in two places at the same time.As we see in both cases and according to the given perspective there are empirical conflicts rooted within the subject status. This brings us to ask the reason and story behind the creation of such Americanized hyphenated phrases. A somewhat troublesome issue that is the main area of my attention. To hit the bottom line let us ask ourselves why isn’t it good enough to be an Iranian and stay one. I am not disrespecting American or talking about any fanatic nationalism, just a common sense question?Does insecurity have any part in this? If the answer is affirmative then we should ask why we have allowed ourselves to become so insecure about our roots and heritage that we are challenging the very nature of its existence. Aren’t we selling off our ethnicity and background so cheaply perhaps to satisfy those who have no care and concern about such roots and us all together? If we feel secure and don't see any value in such representations, then I suggest next time Khaneh Iran wants to address our community then it shall remove the hyphen and what it comes after it and naturalization status, then it is only fair if you have the other two phrases "Iranian", and "American-Iranian" (perhaps for those born in US with Iranian roots) at the same place and all along each other to address the community, as such will be a powerfully inclusive and comprehensive representation of a diverse community as we are. Repeat of past could destroy the very fundamental of one's causes, not because of literary use of one phrase Vs. the other one rather due to the fact that the selection signals an insecure and defeated mindset that has no courage to do otherwise and stand for what it wants to represent.Ba-Sepas Mehdi Mahdavi</text>

<text>Personal: Bijan & Minu are residents of Rochester Hills and have been married for 10 years. He is a manufacturing engineer and she is a physical therapist. Both are very active in Persia House of Michigan.Organization: Meals on Wheels Rochester Older Persons CommissionWhat do they do: Bijan & Minu deliver meals to the elderly. We both joined the Meals on Wheels (MOW) program back in 1994, delivering meals twice a month on Saturdays. Our original intention was to try out volunteer work for a while; however, we have remained with the program since then and have enjoyed giving our time and efforts. The meals on wheels program began in Philadelphia in 1954. This organization started as a single small program serving seven seniors and has grown into hundreds of local "home delivered" and congregate meal programs that serve millions of elderly, disabled, or at-risk persons across the country. Though the help we provide may sound trivial, it has been an important 8 years of learning for us. Many of us take simple things for granted and do not appreciate the abundance of wealth we have around us. True wealth comes in the simple things. For a lonely elder, talking for a couple minutes to someone during a day is a wealth. Or, for us, helping an elder with arthritis to open a can of food or a carton of milk is a wealth of giving. In this case, both the elder and we enjoy this wealth. Our sad moments are when we find out a client name is removed from the distribution list. In most cases we have lost our friend to old age. One of the happy moments we experience is when we are asked “where are you from?" and we clearly and loudly answer back “from Iran”. We have enjoyed volunteering with Meals on Wheels and encourage our friends to join in similar types of volunteer work. For information on having Meals on Wheels delivered or volunteering for delivering meals, contact your local Meals on Wheels office or your local City office you reside in. To nominate a Volunteer of the Season, or if you wish to share with others your volunteer work or your participation in a community work, please contact Khaneh Iran.</text>
